Friends meeting house, The Lanes Brighton sash window restoration

The Brighton Friends Meeting House is a Friends meeting house (Quaker place of worship) in the centre of Brighton, part of the city of Brighton and Hove in East Sussex, England. The building, which dates from 1805, replaced an earlier meeting house of 1690 what was then a small fishing village on the Sussex coast. Located at the junction of Ship Street and Prince Albert Street in The Lanes, the heart of Brighton’s “old town” area,  its architectural and historic importance has been recognised by English Heritage’s granting of Grade II listed status.

Pembroke & Nash Sash Window Restoration Brighton

We have been asked to renovate the existing sash windows. The property is listed which means that we have to work with the existing joinery and restore where possible. The sash windows were worked on when they were last decorated, schedule maintenance is carried out every 5 years. Unfortunately for our client this work was done to a very poor standard, to the extent it has now damaged the windows. The rot which must have been evident was filled and covered up using basic decorators filler. This allowed the rot to develop and has caused considerable damage to the windows.

Issues have arisen with unwanted guests in the evening, this was foreseen and scaffold alarms have been fitted in place.

We must note that this one of the friendliest jobs that we have worked on. Such a peaceful place, with office workers using the garden for lunch and so on. We do so much work in the historic centre of Brighton, we literally have a permanent team based here.

Friends Meeting House Pembroke Nash Completed Job.

What is next on the agenda for P&N? This particular job and the Brighton College project are running in tandem, with some smaller domestic jobs also being complete throughout July & August. This means that now we have a back log of medium size jobs waiting to start. So we are nearly fully booked for fitting up until Christmas.

Pembroke & Nash are also supplying sash windows for main several main contractors on some large construction projects in the Brighton town centre. Heritage knowledge is key when working in conservation areas and we are now being asked to supple many new builds.

These projects will be posted in due course.
